Starting Over at 40: 6 Things a Woman Should Protect First
By Char Sparkle, J.D. · 6 min read

The short answer
Protect, in this order: your safety, your income, your housing, your credit, your beneficiary designations, and your peace. Do them one at a time. Do not skip ahead. That single sequence is the difference between a hard season and a lasting setback.
1. Your safety
Everything else is downstream of this. Change passwords. Turn off location sharing. If you need to leave, leave first and fix the paperwork later.
2. Your income
One steady dollar under your control is worth more than a promise of ten. Protect what already comes in before you chase what could.
3. Your housing
A place that is yours, on paper, for at least three months. That is the floor.
4. Your credit
Pull the report. Freeze it if you need to. Do not co-sign anything for six months, no matter who asks.
5. Your beneficiary designations
Retirement, life insurance, bank accounts. These override wills. Update them the same week you update your address.
6. Your peace
Sleep, sunlight, prayer, and one person you can be honest with. Rebuilding without those four is how women burn out at the finish line.
Frequently asked
How long does starting over take?
As long as it takes. Direction matters more than speed.
What if I keep starting over?
Then you are still here. That is not failure. That is faith with stubbornness, which is a very useful combination.
