How Long Do Collections Stay on Your Credit Report? (And When the Clock Actually Starts)

The short answer

A collection stays on your credit report for seven years from the date of first delinquency on the original account. That date does not reset when the debt is sold, transferred, or paid. If a collector reports a later date, that is called re-aging and it is illegal under the Fair Credit Reporting Act.

The seven-year rule, plainly

The clock starts on the date you first fell behind on the original account and never caught up. If that was March 2019, the collection has to fall off in March 2026, no matter how many times the debt is sold.

How collectors try to reset the clock

They report a false date of first delinquency, usually the date they bought the debt. That inflates your seven years by months or years. Pull your report and check the date of first delinquency field on every collection.

What to do when a collection should have already fallen off

Dispute it in writing with all three bureaus. Cite the FCRA re-aging rule. Include the original account opening date if you have it. Removal is usually within 30 days.

Zombie debt: when old collections come back

Debt buyers sometimes report old, out-of-statute accounts hoping you will pay. Do not confirm the debt is yours. Send a validation letter and dispute the tradeline.

Frequently asked

Does making a payment restart the seven-year clock?

No, not on your credit report. A payment can restart the statute of limitations for a lawsuit in some states, though, which is a separate risk. Do not pay a debt near or past the statute without understanding that trade-off.

What if the collection is from a medical bill?

Medical collections under $500 must be removed. Paid medical collections must be removed. Unpaid medical collections wait one year before reporting. This is federal, as of 2023.
