Collections on Your Credit Report: The CFPB Complaint That Actually Works
By Char Sparkle, J.D. · 5 min read

The short answer
File a CFPB complaint that (1) demands validation of the debt, (2) identifies the specific tradeline and dates, and (3) asks for removal from all three bureaus. Collectors have 15 days to respond to the CFPB. Most either delete or settle. The Collection Removal Guide has the exact template.
Why the CFPB channel works
The CFPB routes your complaint directly to the collector's compliance team. That is a very different audience than the first-line collector you have been avoiding.
The three lines that matter
Validation demand, tradeline identification, and a clear ask. Anything else is noise. The guide has the exact wording.
What to do with the response
If they validate, dispute with the bureaus using their response. If they cannot validate, demand removal in writing. Save every reply.
Frequently asked
Does this work for old debts?
Especially for old debts. The paper trail is often incomplete, which is exactly what a validation demand exposes.
Will this hurt my credit further?
No. Filing a CFPB complaint does not appear on your credit report.
